Why MHFA?

Join us as we teach you the necessary skills in order to be equipped with the knowledge to help someone in a crisis, wherever you may be. Mental Health First Aid is designed to reduce the stigma of mental illness, while understanding and responding to the signs of mental illness and substance abuse disorders.

The St. Louis branch of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) has identified 5 key reasons to take MHFA and we would like to share them with you in hopes of having you join us in our next course located near you.

1.  Mental Health First Aid changes lives. Through teaching people skills to help those with mental health problems connect with appropriate professional care, MHFA improves lives.

2.  Mental Health First Aid fills a critical gap. 1 in 5 Americans suffer from a mental illness, that equals roughly 57.7 million people and 2/3 of those individuals go without treatment. MHFA is a bridge between those suffering and the professionals who can help.

3.  Mental Health First Aid is the latest movement. Individuals across the professional spectrum are jumping on board and receiving training on how to help. Join the primary care professionals, faith communities, school personnel and educators, state police and corrections officers, nursing home staff, mental health authorities, state policymakers, families and the general public to learn how to care for those in an emotional crisis.

4.  Mental Health First Aid makes a difference. By being proactive, MHFA reduces the damaging and costly effects of mental and emotional disorders such as job loss, school dropouts, family and relationship issues, as well as chemical dependency issues.

5.  Mental Health First Aid is YOU. This is your chance to act now and prepare to help when it is needed. There is nothing like the feeling of helping others, and the skills you learn could even help you save a life. Find a course happening near you and enroll now to become a Mental Health First Aider!
