On June 24th, 2011, the Pecan Valley MHMR board of trustees approved a name change in support of Rosa's Law and respect for persons with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) and their families. Rosa's Law , Senate Bill 2781 , was signed into law by President Obama, in October 2010. The purpose of Rosa's Law is to change references in Federal law to mental retardation to references to an intellectual disability, and to change references to a mentally retarded individual to references to an individual with an intellectual disability. The inspiration for the law came from the actions of a family in Edgewater, Maryland. In 2010, a mother of four named Nina Marcellino found out her youngest daughter, Rosa, a child with Down syndrome, had been labeled retarded at school. Nina didn't allow the R-word in her house, and none of her children described their sister that way. Nina teamed up with other parents and her state delegate to introduce a bill to change the terminology in Maryland state law. Texas followed Maryland's example . Credit goes to Texas Senator Zaffirini and Representative Truitt for introducing the "Respectful Language" Bill ( HB 1481) which was passed into law in 2011 during the 82nd Legislative Session.

 

Effective immediately, Pecan Valley MHMR Region will be doing business as "Pecan Valley Centers for Behavioral & Developmental HealthCare".
